Moore & Sons has recently been awarded a contract to install more than 150 safety bollards at 22 Dollarama locations across British Columbia

You may not think much about those yellow posts outside your local Dollarama—but they're quietly doing an important job.

These heavy-duty, concrete-filled steel posts are designed to protect pedestrians, storefronts, and buildings from accidental vehicle impacts.

And yes... they get tested more often than you'd think.

According to ICBC data from 2020 to 2024, there were 9,249 crashes involving buildings, storefronts, utility poles, and other non-roadway objects across BC. That works out to roughly five vehicles every day finding something they definitely weren't aiming for.

Installing a bollard isn't as simple as drilling a hole and dropping it in. Each location requires coring a 12-inch diameter hole through concrete or asphalt in order to reach a depth of up to four feet. Before any digging begins, our crews carefully scan the area with industrial-grade utility locating equipment to identify underground utilities and avoid damaging buried infrastructure.

The bollards themselves are built to last, featuring a galvanized finish that resists fading, chipping, and corrosion, helping them stand up to BC's weather for years to come.

The busiest store on our list will receive 17 bollards, while every location will gain an extra layer of protection for customers, employees, and storefronts alike.

So next time you're heading into Dollarama, take a look at those sturdy yellow posts by the entrance. They're not just there to stop shopping carts—they're there to stop two tonnes of misplaced enthusiasm.
