At 14362 32B Avenue in South Surrey lies Elgin Wynd - a quiet bare-land strata of twelve elegant homes. Guarding its entrance are four stately gate columns clad in cultured stone, each topped with a distinctive crown that has greeted residents and visitors for over three decades.

Earlier this summer, one of those proud sentinels met an unfortunate end - a dump truck accidentally struck it, leaving the structure beyond repair.

That's where Moore and Sons came in.

With years of experience restoring damaged concrete and stonework, we were ready to take on the challenge. The strata council had two clear goals:

  1. Safety first: The damaged column posed a serious risk of collapse and needed to be demolished and rebuilt immediately.
  2. Preserve the heritage look: The original crown had to be saved and reinstalled to maintain the aged charm that matched the other columns.

Step 1: Careful Demolition and Reconstruction

Our crew began by dismantling the damaged column carefully and quietly, minimizing noise and dust for nearby residents. Once the area was cleared, we constructed a new 30" x 30", 10-foot-tall column using masonry concrete blocks that were stacked and bonded with mortar. The hollow cores of the blocks were then filled with approximately half a cubic meter of fresh concrete to create a reinforced, solid core. Once cured, the result was a robust new column designed to stand strong for decades to come.

Step 2: Matching the Stones to Time

Next came the artistic part - rewrapping the new column with cultured stone. But there was a catch: new stones would look, well, too new beside their weathered companion. The difference was obvious, and the balance just wasn't right.

So, we made a bold decision: remove and redo the cultured stone on both columns for a perfect match. Using Cobblefield Gray stones by Boral, our team carefully reinstalled each piece, blending craftsmanship with precision.

Step 3: The Grand Finish

Finally, the original crown - saved from the wreck - was craned back into place, restoring the column's signature silhouette. The result? You'd never guess an accident had happened at all.

Today, the Elgin Wynd entrance once again stands proud, the twin columns perfectly in harmony - ready to welcome residents for another 30 years (and probably more).

At Moore and Sons, we don't just rebuild structures - we restore stories.
